Berlin's Techno Heterotopia
Are we dying or being born? — techno as a place for the alien, the other.
This project explores Berlin's techno culture as a form of post-industrial resistance, a space for processing historical trauma and imagining futuristic utopias. Drawing on Foucault, Turner, and Soja, the club is represented as a heterotopic and liminal space where norms dissolve, identities shift, and new possibilities emerge.
Today, Berlin faces Clubsterben (the death of clubs) caused by gentrification, rising costs, and commodification; dynamics that threaten the authenticity and survival of these spaces. Yet, techno began as a liberated zone and a refuge for marginalized communities. Through its repetitive structure and dark vibrations, it creates an eternal present, serving as a contemporary ritual of dissolution and rebirth.
